MDT Meeting Minutes for November 7, 2006 Attended by: Amanda Broun, Carolyne Albert-Garvey, Marcia Jackson, Vicki Otten, Pam Joos, Susan Banta, Erna Marcus, Linda Singer, Martha Saccocio Guests: Dan Schneider, Teddy Galligan, Jacques Kapuscinski Open The meeting began at 4:30 with introductions. Several guest parents were in attendance. Staffing Update Murch has hired a Technology Specialist who will be working with the teachers to integrate technology into the classroom. The first task will be to assess the technology needs of the teachers and making sure that the computers we already have are in working order and being properly utilized. Principal Albert-Garvey has been given the go ahead by DCPS to hire a Special Ed aide. Job descriptions will be posted on area websites to solicit applicants. Murch had hired a full time nurse who unfortunately had to leave to deal with an illness in the family. At this time, the Department of Health, the agency in charge of hiring school nurses, is not promising us a permanent nurse anytime soon. We currently have coverage from the same nurses for between 13-24 hours per week. Principal Albert-Garvey is looking into hiring two part time nurses to provide us with full time coverage. Principal Albert-Garvey would like to find some ways to increase her list of qualified substitute teachers that she can go to when needed. Some area schools use parents from the community to substitute. We all agreed that we felt comfortable with parents being substitute teachers. A note will be place in the Murch newsletter and the Chevy Chase listserv to encourage parents to consider applying to be a substitute teacher. Linda wondered if we should reactivate the parent advocacy group that might try to help Principal Albert-Garvey deal with some of the perennial problems with DCPS, including hiring. Pam has been in touch with parents at Janney and Lafayette who are interested in joining forces to advocate for our schools. We agreed to discuss this more at the next meeting. Website Jacques Kapuscinski, Murch parent who has kindly taken on the managing of the website, gave a presentation on the needs and issues of the current website. We all agreed that the image of the school for new parents and the usefulness of the website to current parents could be maximized. Some short term goals include adding some pictures of the school and more useful information for current and prospective parents. The new technology specialist can potentially help teachers have a presence on the web so that each grade level will be represented.Marketing With the upcoming Open House, the way in which we advertise the achievements of Murch was discussed. Some of this is in the literature that is produced, but it is also tied into the material that is put on the website. More information about student successes and the specialized curriculum at the upper levels is needed. Vicki agreed to collect information from teacher team leaders on their curriculum. Other Business MDT is planning a parent forum before the January 16th HSA general meeting. The Deal principal is coming to Murch to talk to interested families on November 16th. The meeting was adjourned at 6 pm. Signed
