Registration Opens for The Language Program:

Learn More at Our Open House on May 18

It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of the school year and harder still to believe it is time to start planning for 2012/13. But as springtime rounds its peak bloom, The Language Program of Capitol Language Services has opened its registration for 2012/13 – placement is guaranteed for all students enrolled by June 1. In addition to language instruction in Spanish, French, and Italian, The Language Program offers an activities program that runs until 6 pm. Come learn more about the program and meet the teachers at our Open House on Friday, May 18, 6:30-8:30 pm. Teachers will give an overview of their classes and current students will a put on a short performance. Light refreshments will be served.

To RSVP for the Open House (required by May 15), contact Director Cinzia Roveta at cinzia@captollanguageservices.com or (202) 487-1857.

Reminder – The Language Program’s Open House Is May 18

Join Capitol Language Services for a special Open House to learn more about The Language Program, which offers the parents of Murch students a convenient way to introduce their children to a second language right after school—in coordination with Murch staff, The Language Program will bring your child to classes across the street from the playground. The Language program also hosts an activities-based after-care program in a small, structured environment.

Why enroll your child in language learning? Research has shown that learning a second language not only increases a child’s attention span but also makes it more likely that a child will attain native-level proficiency later in life.

To RSVP for the Open House (required by May 15), contact Director Cinzia Roveta cinzia@capitollanguageservices.com or call (202) 487-1857.

On Tuesday, the Murch Track and Field Team competed in the East/West Championships at McKinley Tech High School. It was a long, hot day, but the athletes turned out one top performance after another, with many winning their events. Medals were awarded for the top three finishers in each event, but points were awarded for the top eight. Nearly every athlete brought in points, which contributed to the overall standings: The girls came in first place in the West division and the boys placed second!

“Races and events are only successful when athletes train hard and do their best,” said parent coach Jen Closser. “On Tuesday, the Murch girls and boys showed just that.”

The coaches would like to extend a special thank you to all the parents who helped make this meet happen, particularly Alok Yadav, Paul Arnsberger, Stefanie Berger, and Karin Perkins.

After a well-earned reprieve from practice on Wednesday, practice will resume on Friday as scheduled. Next meet: the City Championships on May 16. Go, Mustangs!

The Murch Track and Field Team will participate in its second meet of the season this Tuesday, May 1 : the East/West Championships. The meet is scheduled to take place at Roosevelt Senior High School.  Murch athletes will be competing against athletes from other schools in the West in both individual and relay events, such as the 100-meter dash, the high jump, the 1600-meter run, and the 4×400 relay.  The 48-member team has been working hard, in rain and shine, to prepare for this meet. A special thank you to Kirsten Anderson, Stefanie Berger, Sara Kanach, Ellen Forte, and Susan Kemp for stepping in as Guest Coaches the past few weeks. The athletes learned a lot and had a ton of fun. Go, Mustangs!

Are you interested in helping our students grow through nutrition education and garden-based supplements to learning in all subject matters? Do you believe that a school yard filled with nature adds to the social, emotional, physical, and academic development of our students? Join Murch’s active group of parent volunteers and teachers who develop and maintain our schoolyard living laboratories. On May 15 from 7-9 p.m. the GreenScene will meet at the home of Karen and Tim Abrams to review the projects on deck for the rest of this school year and to plan and budget the 2012-2013 year. If you have a pet project or pet peeve, now is the time to be heard! The following areas are under the GreenScene canopy:

  • Murch has a Native Plant and Butterfly Garden where preK and 2nd grade students live what they learn about plant and animal life cycles. All students get to walk the maze and see a mosaic of beautiful native plants abuzz with insect and wild life.
  • Murch’s Organic Vegetable Garden provides nutritious snacks for students while nourishing their understanding of where food comes from, plant and insect biology, math, cultural studies, language, and art. For example, our first graders study the Native American folklore and tradition of using companion planting in the Native American Three Sisters Garden. They see how the vastly different growth habits of corn, beans, and squash work together. They learn about the nutrition and uses of these foods — particularly the uses of dent corn in the modern American diet. All of our students get to marvel at the height of the corn stalks, hunt for bugs and beans crawling up the stalks, and hypothesize about whether the pumpkin vines will reach Reno Rd.!
  • Murch boasts an incredibly diverse Tree Canopy, now including a native fruit orchard planted by some of our 3rd graders. Ask any Murch student why trees are important and you will be amazed at how much they know!
  • The Textile Garden is a beautiful patchwork quilt of plants and flowers used for making cloth, dyes, paints, woven goods, and paper. It is a beautiful and quiet little corner where children go to explore, and where they see some of the natural origins of textile goods.
  • Murch’s Herb Container Gardens are a fun exercise in math for our third grade gardeners and in colonial gardening for our fourth graders. The students learn the many uses and varieties of herbs, including herbs as an organic form of pest management for our vegetable garden. In most of our pots the leaves are pinched and tasted by kids before the bugs can get to them!
  • Our Eco Center has a water barrel and composters, where students gather water for the gardens in recycled containers and deposit food and plant wastes to make compost to nourish our soil. Both practices help keep the Earth’s water and air a little cleaner. Did you know that plant based materials in our landfills decompose anaerobically and give off methane gas? When we compost those same materials, they decompose aerobically and become healthy, life-giving soil.

Whether you have or want a green thumb, a creative mind, a knack for nutrition, or are a fundraising-grant applying guru, you’ll find a place to volunteer in the GreenScene. Please RSVP for the Wine and Veggies meeting to Lisa Burke.

The Budget Committee of the Murch Home-School Association is in the process of planning a budget for next year’s HSA. As a precursor to proposing a budget, we are reviewing all expenditures made this year and evaluating the effectiveness of our programs. Our goal is to ensure that we spend your donations in the most effective way to advance our mission: to “serve the best interests of the pupils of Murch Elementary School, and to promote mutual cooperation among parents, teachers, and the Board of Education of the District of Columbia.”

To that end, we would like to invite all members of the Murch community (parents, teachers, and even kids) to give us feedback about the effectiveness of HSA programs, and what we could do better next year. Please send all comments to Ben Leff, budget committee chair.
