You wake up in the morning and you go to get the newspaper, the Murch Mustang. But you find not one, but 2 newspapers; the other one being the Mustang Weekly. Well, that’s what you’ll find weekly now in Murch.
How did this happen? Well, the Mustang Weekly started because they wanted to compete with the Murch Mustang. Both newspapers have released 2 editions so far, and are working on their third.
The Murch Mustang and The Mustang Weekly are released every Friday and already has a lot of clients working on articles. The Murch Mustang is passed out to every class of third through fifth grade in their Friday folders. Be on the lookout for new editions and releases.

Murch students met authors at Politics and Prose
Murch really loves books! With Battle of the Books, that is pretty apparent. We love books so much that our 4th and 5th grad classes got to see real live authors! The 5th grade got too see Sharon Draper, the author of many books, and her most recent is “Out of my Mind.” The story is about a girl who has a major disability. When asked why she wrote the book, Ms. Draper said it was to give kids, like Melody, the main character, a voice. All of the students enjoyed it because she was very humorous, using her knowledge of kids, because she used to be a teacher!
4th graders went to see Norton Juster, author of “The Phantom Tollbooth.” All of the 4th graders walked to Politics and Prose to see him speak. He is Ms. Mathur’s favorite author, and the class read the book as a read aloud. It also inspired some of them to buy the book.

The Student Blog sat down with Mr. Cebrzynski, Murch’s principal, for an insider’s view on his special pizza recipe.
SB: When did you come up with your secret recipe?
Mr. C: 6 years ago
SB: What are some of your ingredients?
Mr. C: Corm meal, olive oil, Sarasota flour
SB: I guess your secret pizza recipe is not so much of a secret, do you have any other secret recipes?
Mr. C: No
SB: What is so secret about the recipe?
Mr. C: It is a combination of the best of the best.
Thanks for your time Mr. C. as we look forward to more interviews in the future.

On Friday, May 4th fifth graders went on a field trip to the Patuxent River Park in Maryland. We split into three groups. There were three activities: a boat tour, a nature hike, and an animal observation activity.
On the boat tour, we saw many species of birds such as Osprey, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Great Blue Herons. We also saw many turtles and a beaver lodge. There were many species of fish.
While on the nature hike, we saw animals such as snakes, turtles, and birds. We also saw many extraordinary plants, including one that you could use as a straw to drink from. Did you know that in a marsh, the dirt is different from the dirt in your backyard? The mud in marshes can be packed down into a mud ball and can be used as a sponge!
In the indoor animal observation activity a person picked an animal or plant prop and a card from a suitcase. Everyone else would try to guess what the prop was. Then the person who picked the prop would say what the prop was and would read the card. The card held a lot of interesting facts about the animal/plant.
I think all of the fifth graders learned a lot about river ecosystems on this field trip. And I think we’re all glad that we came!

Everyone is excited about the Talent Show, which will be for all people who want to do the talent show. Here is one interview with all the questions answered by Franny Jensen, fourth grade, and Talent Show organizer Marcia. Wood, mother of third-grader Olivia and second-grader Sam.
Q: Why did you want to manage the talent show?
A: I believe that it’s a great experience for children to be able to get up on stage and perform, so when I was asked to organize the talent show this year, I happily agreed to volunteer my time.
Q: Do you have experience with the talent show?
A: My kids have been in the talent show the last couple of years, so I’ve seen how the Murch talent show has been organized recently. I am also a singer/songwriter and children’s performer, so I sing and play guitar for others regularly. Over the years I’ve done a variety of different kinds of performing, including acting, musical theatre, jazz & blues singing, and choral singing. In addition to that, I’m a music teacher for young children and have even written and directed a preschool musical. Hopefully all of those experiences will guide me as I help the kids to make this a good show! (P.S. If you want to listen to my songs, I have a record coming out in June that you can listen to for free on the computer — with your parents’ permission of course. The website is www.marshagoodmanwood.bandcamp.com.)
Q: When you were a kid were you in a talent show?
A: We didn’t have talent shows like this in my school, but I sang in the chorus in elementary school, played a musical instrument, and was part of a children’s theatre group that performed plays for the community.
Q: Do you see more girls or boys?
A: I think we have a good mix of performers coming out to participate in this year’s show. Come and see for yourself on Friday, May 11th at 6 PM!
