Question 1:

376 X 18

That’s the beginning of the DC CAS. The DC CAS is a test that students take to show the school’s performance. Bad scores in the DC CAS can force the school to close. The DC CAS is the most important test of the year. There are smaller tests called PIA, that shows how good a student is doing.

We asked a few students from each of the intermediate grades about how they are preparing for the test.

Question: How are you preparing for the DC CAS?

3rd graders: Studying, having a good breakfast.

4th graders: Working in centers about different things everyday.

5th graders: We are learning about math, reading, and writing.

Question: On a scale of 1-10, how much pressure does the DC CAS give you?

3rd graders: Three.

4th graders: About five.

5th graders: Seven.

Five testing tips to help you survive!

- Get a good breakfast.

- Pay attention in class

- Study hard

- Work your hardest

- Keep calm

The Track and Field team for this year has hit the ground running! If you do Track, you can do long distance, shot put, sprinting, hurdles, triple jump, long jump, relays, and on Fridays you do yoga for training! Practices are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. There are 9 track leaders – Sarah Closser, Erin Harper, Marco Kemp Jacques Nissen, John Keating, and Ella Gantman. Ella says, “When you are a Track Leader, you have special practices before the season starts and we had 2 practices to learn the warm-ups.” In the whole team there is about 50-60 kids so practices are quite chaotic. 4th and 5th graders are on the team. Throughout the hour and 15 minutes practice, we do warm-ups, games, activities and practice for our individual activities (races).  On Fridays we do yoga.  The head coach, our very own Mr. Berger works with Mr. Smith, and Jennifer Closser to form our coach squad.

Wow! Look at the beautiful trees outside of Murch! Where did they all come from? Well, most of the trees are planted by the organization Casey Trees and with a little help by the Murch  3rd grade. What exactly is Casey Trees? Casey Trees is an organization that plants trees all over DC! We planted persimmon trees, paw-paw trees, Asian pear trees, fig trees, and apple trees.  Take a look at the pictures and playground for a view.

Charge and bring your copy of “ Phineas L. McGuire… Erupts.”  The Battle of the Books has begun! The Battle of the Books is still raging on as readers study their books to answer questions. Ms. Hope and Ms. Bell have been the battle administrators as students in grades 3, 4, and 5 compete for glory.

Each battle takes place in the library during specials time and readers answer questions about specific books. The maximum each student can answer is twice because they only have two paint sticks. Each question starts with, “ In which book…” These battles tend to be competitive and sometimes, even luck plays a factor.

Each team is asked twelve questions and the team with the most correct answers wins. A team is awarded three points if the answer is fully correct. If they need an author assist they are only awarded two points. It’s never to late to start reading because battles resume after the DC CAS. If you want your class to win…READ! READ! READ!

Zach Lordan, a fifth grader, was one of a few winners of the student blog contest! For those of you who couldn’t figure out the mystery word, the word was “article.” For his prize he got his own personal interview by the Student Blog! How cool is that?

Zach found the word “article” after finding the letters A-R-T and then it clicked and all came together. Some interesting facts about him are he made a travel baseball team and made it to the majors. Some school activities he participates in are the Student Council and Peer Mediators. His favorite subject in school is social studies and his favorite place to go is Disney World. He has tons of Murch memories but his favorite was when he became the Student Council vice president. Zach likes many things at Murch but something he would like to change is to have a longer recess. We wish Zach the best of luck!

It’s what the fifth grade has been waiting for. The field trip of the historic battle site of Gettysburg. The battlefield of Gettysburg was fought from July 1, 1861 to July 3, 1861. The fifth graders had been studying about the American Civil War (1861-1865) in Social Studies. The war tore families apart over the issue of slavery. The fifth graders learned about the battle, the burying, and President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address. When they went on the field trip, the fifth grade saw the amazing view at Little Round Top and General George Mead’s hook on the high ground. Murch’s fifth graders spent an entire school day observing the battleground and cemetery. The field trip was a complete success with both fun and education.
