Murch Profile (PDF)

The Murch community is rich with wonderful traditions which provide positive continuity and ritual for our children. Parents are welcome at all Murch events, and special notices/flyers are sent out in backpacks, as well as announcements made in the Friday newsletter. Creative input from Murch children and families on making these events even better is always welcome of course -- as are ideas for new traditions!

Back-To-School Night: A few weeks into the new school year, this adults-only event provides parents the opportunity to meet the principal, teachers and other staff members, and visit their children’s classrooms. At least one parent from each Murch family is expected to attend, since this informational event sets the tone for the entire year.

Halloween Parade: All the children, and many of the teachers and staff, get into costumes and parade around the block in a mid-afternoon procession, on or close to Halloween day.

School Spirit Week: Sponsored by the Student Council, this is a week in June with themes for each day, such as “Wacky Wednesday,” wherein children are encouraged to dress as ‘wackily’ as they wish. School spirit and community service are emphasized during this week.

Murch Talent Show: An annual event, the talent show features entertainment from students and faculty.

Awards Assembly: At the end of each school year, there are assemblies to recognize the achievements, participation, and volunteerism of Murch students. Awards and recognition are given to students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Sixth grade awards for leadership, academic excellence, and community spirit include: the Wanda Washburn Award, the American Legion School Medal, the Peter Barry Award, the Presidential Academic Fitness Awards, and Ben W. Murch Academic Scholar Award.

Promotion:The ceremony which marks the passage of sixth graders from Murch features form Murch graduates as speakers.  A representative from the D.C. School Board also participates to enhances this very special occasion.
