Find Out How Things Work
Hands on Science is a one hour after-school enrichment program for grades K-1 and 2-3. Students explore the wonders of the world through observation and experimentation – all in a hand-on manner! From Earth Science to Physics, past students have learned about anatomy, camouflage, colors, acids and bases and many other wonders of science. Classes are usually led by parent volunteers, who undergo a short training exercise. You do NOT have to have a science background to lead a class—just a love of watching kids explore and learn! All materials and lesson plans are included in the class kits – all the leader has to do is prep the materials, review the lesson plan, and lead the class – it’s that easy! Class size is limited to 11 students and there are 8 weekly classes per session. If you are interested in leading a class, please contact Alma Paty.
Also, we have not offered classes to grades 4-5 in the past due to other demands. Please let Alma know if your child would have the time to do HOS for grades 4-5 and what days are the best.
HOS Adult Leaders Needed
Are you interested in leading a class in earth science, chemistry or architecture? Do you want to help bring more science opportunities to Murch students? If so, then please consider becoming an Adult Leader for the after-school Hands On Science (HOS) program. This is a parent-led/volunteer-based program whereby the Adult Leaders commit to leading an 8-week class after school on the weekday of your choice. You can also choose what grade level you want to lead, be it K-1 or 2-3. And what is so helpful about the HOS program is that the class materials and guidebook are already done for you! The kits are all-inclusive and the guidebook is self-explanatory and the lessons are fully explained for each one-hour session. Please contact Alma Paty if you are interested. Once we have enough leaders, we will schedule a short training session over coffee and pastries. We hope to find enough interest so that the Adult Leaders can co-teach a class together, which helps with classroom management. If you become an adult leader and lead a class, your age-appropriate child is automatically enrolled in the program, the registration fee is waived ($65), and childcare is provided for younger children of adult leaders.
