If a child is known to have head lice, the following will happen:
Teachers
- Notify the School Nurse the same day that lice is detected.
Note: a student with head lice may remain in class for the remainder of that day. - Notify the Project Manager the same day that lice is detected. Because of privacy concerns, only send the teacher’s name (not the child’s name).
- Take routine and ongoing preventative precautions: do not allow children to share hats or combs, do not pile backpacks or coats, talk about lice prevention, etc.
School Nurse
- Notify the Project Manager the same day that lice is detected. Because of privacy concerns, only send the teacher’s name (not the child’s name).
- Contact the parents of the affected student, so treatment can begin that afternoon/evening.
- Share treatment resources with parents, as needed.
- Once received, submit a copy of the parent note (attesting that treatment has begun) to the front office and alert that child’s teacher that they may return to class.
- Advise parents on ways to monitor the child for re-infestation.
Project Manager
- On the same day that notification is received, the Project Manager will email parents of students in the affected class, so they can check all students at home.
Parents
- If your child has lice, provide immediate treatment.
- Submit a note to the school nurse attesting to the fact that the student is undergoing treatment & the type of treatment taken. Once the note is received, the student may return to school.
- Check your child regularly at home, regardless of whether lice has been detected.
- Take precautions and educate yourself on prevention measures: do not allow your child to share sports helmets, do routine checks before and after sleepovers or camping trips, talk
to your child about lice prevention, etc. - If you need additional support or advice, please reach out to the school nurse.
